The Flying Dutchman
Musical theatre with marionettes: an exciting adventure full of magic and visual poetry. With music by Wagner, Marschner and Adam. For adults and children, to be seen in the atmospheric Amsterdam Marionette Theater.
The Flying Dutchman
His ship with blood-red sails
The wind rages, and the waves are towering. Captain Daland and his crew can barely weather the storm – the ship runs aground on a sandbank. In the distance, another ship emerges. A ship with blood-red sails and blackened masts…
That’s how the story of The Flying Dutchman begins. An old legend about the power of the sea, a mysterious ghost ship and unfulfilled desires. Countless writers, poets and filmmakers were inspired by it. From the poet Heinrich Heine to the film Pirates of the Caribbean.
The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre presents a unique marionette adaptation with five puppeteers manipulating large wooden figures. Accompanied by their recorded soundtrack, featuring brief Dutch text, the performance transcends language barriers due to its visual and musical nature.
Tailored for adults and children (from 7 years), the show offers a delightful experience for all. Additional details for children can be found here (in Dutch).
