Sustainable hotels

Choosing sustainable accommodation is one of the easiest ways to reduce your footprint in Amsterdam. Today, you can identify those playing their part with indicators like certifications for sustainable hotels. However, some go even further, with specific efforts to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, or support local initiatives. We’ve got you covered with this list of hotels focused on sustainability.

Hotel Jakarta

Hotel Jakarta has earned its reputation as one of the most sustainable hotels and meeting spaces nationwide thanks to its smart energy-saving measures and infrastructure. Its efficiency-first construction (certified BREEAM 'Excellent') made it one of the first energy-neutral hotels in the Netherlands, alongside other key innovations. Air temperatures are regulated with smart heat and cold storage systems, shower water is heated by solar energy, and there’s even a subtropical indoor garden sustained by collected rainwater. Add “green bike” rentals and partnerships with initiatives from Hotels for Trees to Join the Pipe, and you have one truly sustainable place to stay.

Conscious Hotels

The clue is in the name of Conscious Hotels, where sustainability is much more than an afterthought. Thanks to a series of eco-conscious decisions, all four central locations (Westerpark, Vondelpark, Museumplein and The Tire Station, Zuid) are certified Green Key Gold. Building materials, linens, and furniture are cradle-to-cradle, recycled, or secondhand. Energy-saving tech and policies include solar panels, gas-free locations, and smart heating and lighting. Plus, there’s a range of meat-free options across their catering menus.

Amsterdam Farm Lodge

Amsterdam Farm Lodge brings nature into the city. Part of a sustainable urban farming project called NoordOogst, the Lodge takes over a former asylum centre that is now a rural idyll, surrounded by sustainable crops and farm animals – sometimes roaming among the guests. Besides its value as urban renewal, the Lodge and project contribute to the ecosystem and community thanks to its produce, workshops and structures: you can count on recycled materials and upcycled furniture. Grab a vegetarian takeaway and stroll through the beehives, vineyards and pancake house – and do it all guilt-free.

Hyatt Regency

At the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam, sustainability is built in – literally. It’s not just the green wall; a vertical garden that even includes homes for bats and swallows! The Hyatt Regency is also a new build, designed with sustainability in mind, as its BREEAM 'Excellent' certification attests: that means energy efficiency is prioritised on every floor. Add to the equation ground-source heat pumps, partnerships with many sustainability initiatives (reducing waste and encouraging fundraising) and a specific sustainability plan for events hosted here. And you have yourself a reliably green-certified hotel.

Park Plaza Victoria

Don’t say Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam isn’t aiming high regarding sustainability. Green Globe certified, this ultra-central hotel aims to become carbon neutral by 2040. And they’re well on their way thanks to eco-friendly measures, including water, energy, gas and waste reduction strategies; sustainably sourced food and green cleaning products; and supporting social initiatives and local businesses. You know they mean business when there’s a devoted ESG budget. However, the flashiest tool in their eco belt is the restaurant kitchen’s waste reduction system: an AI scanner that identifies the most wasted foods, eliminating them from future meal planning.

On the other side of the city from their flagship Jakarta, WestCord Fashion Hotel Amsterdam was likewise designed with eco-credentials in mind. Rooftop solar panels supply 15% of the building’s energy, which is also ultra-efficient thanks to smart tech for lighting, insulation, wiring and temperature regulation. You can also count on Fairtrade, sustainable and organic products and green cleaning products. Plus, there are targeted policies to separate and reduce the waste of food, coffee cups, water and water bottles. It’s these innovative and committed sustainability chops that got the Fashion Hotel certified Green Key.

Steady wins the sustainability race over at Mövenpick's central location. Certified Green Global Platinum, for over a decade of consistent, sustainable practices, this hotel has implemented and sustained a number of green measures to keep its title. That includes using Fairtrade and organic products and linen, energy-saving tech and laundry policies and a social sustainability plan – not to mention waste reduction partnerships with Too Good To Go (redistributing food that would otherwise be thrown away) and the Made Blue Foundation (reducing water and plastic use in hospitality, while improving access to clean water elsewhere).

Even on historic foundations, it’s possible to modernise your hotel in terms of sustainability. That’s the approach at Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam, where 17th-century townhouses adjoin more modern structures, which boast a “SemperGreen” wall. But it’s the policies that contribute to this hotel's Green Key certification. As attested by Michelin, the hotel’s sustainability measures include energy-efficient lighting and laundry policy, eco-friendly cleaning products, waste reduction strategies, support for the local community, and staff training and volunteering.
