Cello Biennale: Cello Unlimited Kian Soltani

Kian Soltani is one of the most sought-after cellists of our time. In 2015, at the age of 23, he made his Dutch debut during the Sneak Preview of the sixth Cello Biennale. Since then, he has been one of the regular festival cellists. In addition to classical work, Kian has always had a guilty pleasure since childhood: bombastic and compelling film music from major Hollywood blockbusters.

Cello Biennale: Bach & Breakfast Kian Soltani

Six festival days start as every day should: a light breakfast with freshly squeezed juice, a warm croissant and a cappuccino, followed by one of the six cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by a different soloist each time. A Biennale classic that is loved by everyone!

Sani e Tyari Tori (Our Goods Tell Stories) is the mini-exhibition by photographer Winny Sandvliet, in which products with a deep Surinamese cultural meaning are central through product photography. The exhibition can be seen in The Showroom in Amsterdam-Oost.

Cello Biennale: Cello-Yurt Surprise concert

se note: these concerts are sold-out. During the Cello Biennale, a Yurt will be on the terrace of the Muziekgebouw. This traditional round tent is used by nomads in Central Asia. The unique setting of the Cello Yurt is the ideal backdrop for an intimate concert.

Cello Biennale: Cello-Yurt: Sangita Maya Fridman

Please note; this concert is sold out. Maya Fridman plays Sangita by the Belgian composer Wim Henderickx, who died in 2022, in a version for cello and electronics. Henderickx originally composed this work for cello and orchestra, commissioned by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra for the seventh Cello Biennale Amsterdam. The world premiere by Jean-Guihen Queyras was one of the highlights of the Biennale in 2018.

Cello Biennale: Masterclasses

Students from all over the world come to Amsterdam during the Cello Biennale to see and hear in a few days what they would otherwise have had to learn over many years. The masterclasses are open to the public.

Cellofest: Kian Soltani and Friends

The non-classical side of Kian Soltani was already introduced to the audience in 2020 during his performance at Cellofest with the Rembrandt Trio and Kayhan Kalhor, the Iranian master of kamancheh. For this performance, Kian will once again bring Iranian friends: percussionist Naghib Shanbehzadeh and ud player Hossein Behroozinia.

Cellofest: Mela Marie Spaemann & Christian Bakanic

In 2018, Marie Spaemann stole the show at the first edition of CELLOFEST with her intimate pop songs that combine jazz, soul and a touch of classical. Now she is back and brings along Austrian accordionist Christian Bakanic, who adds tango nuevo and European folk to the mix of styles.

Cellofest: Raphael Weinroth-Browne

All-rounder Raphael Weinroth-Browne plays with Norwegian progressive rock icons Leprous, played for 40,000 people at the world's largest metal festival and made viral YouTube covers of prominent metal songs.

Cellofest: Martin Fondse and Pau Sola Masafrets

In the world of Boy Edgar Prize winner Martin Fondse, the boundaries between genres such as classical music, jazz, Latin and world music simply do not exist. He was the Composer of the Fatherland from 2022 to 2024 and is composing a piece for the Hello Cello Orchestra this Biennale.

Cellofest: Jamsession

During 3 workshops prior to the festival, conservatory students will work on improvisation techniques, playing and responding to chord progressions and arranging jazz standards for cello ensemble. Free to attend.

Cellofest: Chieko Collective

In 2022, the ensemble led by cellist Chieko Donker Duyvis took over the restaurant 4'33 grand café with their swinging Latin music during a Cello Lounge. This year they will perform in the BIMHUIS.
