The man with the many pianos - Alexander Melnikov

Alexander Melnikov is as crazy as he is brilliant. Not only does he have an immensely wide repertoire, but he also plays many types of pianos. For his internationally acclaimed program Many Pianos, he brings no fewer than four historic keyboards with him to play alongside the Steinway concert grand piano. With fantasies from Bach, via Mozart, Chopin and Scriabin to Schnittke, Melnikov is the guide on an enriching journey of discovery through the minds of these composers. At the same time, in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, he highlights the development from the fortepiano to the modern concert grand piano.

Holland Festival will return in 2024. A leading international performance arts festival in the Netherlands, the Holland Festival takes place in Amsterdam in June. Since 1947, the festival has been providing Dutch and international theatregoers with a survey of the latest, best and most widely acclaimed productions from around the world. Sheherazade CvA Symphony Orchestra

Enchanting timbres, appealing melodies and a touch of oriental spice are the ingredients that make Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral suite Sheherazade a much-loved work. To escape her execution, Scheherazade tells the sultan stories for one thousand and one nights. Rimsky-Korsakov takes the listener through Sinbad’s sea voyage and encounters with extraordinary figures to a dazzling celebration in Baghdad.

Evening concert: Smetana, Sjostakovitsj, Beethoven

A moving ego document in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. The fifteen quartets of Shostakovich can be seen as one large personal document, and the dark Eleventh string quartet is no exception. The structure is exceptional: seven short, contiguous sections refer to the classical divertimento. Beethoven’s Eighth string quartet also features a minimal extramusical motif: in the third movement, a Russian theme appears as a tribute to the commissioner, the Russian ambassador Andrey Razumovsky.
