Dentists

Overall the Dutch tend to take exceptional care of their teeth. It is common practice in the Netherlands to visit a dentist (tandarts) once or twice a year for a check-up (controle).

Finding a dentist

Ask around. Friends, neighbours or your family GP may know of someone. Alternatively, consult the website Tandarts.nl (in Dutch) for dentists, orthodontists and dental hygienists. Then, simply telephone a dentist and ask to join their patient list. If you need a bit more inspiration, check out this article about what you need to know before visiting a dentist in the Netherlands.

Emergencies

For emergency dental treatment outside of surgery hours, telephone the practice. An answering machine will tell who to contact in an emergency. Alternatively, visit Dental 365, which provides emergency dental care on a walk-in basis.

Coverage of dental costs

For those over the age of 18, the cost of dental care is not included in the basic package (basispakket) of a health insurance policy. Supplementary dental insurance can cover the cost (or a percentage of it). For the exact coverage, check the policy terms or contact the insurer.
