Cosy campfire terraces in Amsterdam

The Netherlands isn’t exactly known for its tropical climate, but the Dutch don’t let something as trivial as the weather keep them from enjoying a little al fresco socialising.  When the temperature drops, Amsterdam’s terrace bars become welcoming escapes, complete with heaters and – if you’re very lucky – campfires.

This post-industrial hipster hotspot in Amsterdam North wins the prize for having possibly the largest fire pit in the city. And it’s on a beach, which gives it that lovely, blissed-out vibe. Hunker down, resist any urges to get out your guitar (don’t be that person), and keep toasty around the flames. If it’s too windy for a campfire outside, then Pllek also has an indoor fire pit – such is their commitment to your cosiness.

Never one to be outdone by its neighbour, the wonderful NDSM café bar Noorderlicht (Dutch for Northern Lights) boasts a large fire pit nestled in the middle of its whimsical garden terrace. One of the most magical places in Amsterdam to while away an evening, Noorderlicht is the place to be if you like creative food and craft beers. It also hosts live music and mini festivals from time to time, so settle in and feel the love.

Zuidpool

Under the glow of hundreds of lanterns, you can warm your hands around the campfire at the capital’s least expected spot for an urban beach. Zuidpool is tucked away behind the RAI Amsterdam convention centre and transforms into a winter wonderland once the cold season arrives.

Rainarai

Rainarai's Westerpark outpost serves up heaping portions of North African fare al fresco on their expansive terrace and if you time it well, a roaring campfire. Tuck into a three-course meal of roasted pumpkin, artichoke hearts and marinated sardines among others, while the fire crackles and whispy smokestacks form overhead.

Cafe de Ceuvel

Another Amsterdam Noord favourite, de Ceuvel is a bohemian dream, with a fiery heart when the dark draws in. Located right on the water, this former shipyard is now a creative industrial space, that serves as a café, restaurant and events space. Perhaps most importantly though, boaters can dock at the café's own jetty before joining punters around the fire, while taking in the watery views and a much-deserved drink.

For those willing to travel a little further afield, there are good options in the wider Amsterdam region, too. Woodstock 69 in Bloemendaal makes for a beachy campfire edition and Ruigoord's creative village and the events it puts on often come complete with one of the city's best open fires.
