Arrival of Sinterklaas
A spectacular entrance over water and across land
He might look similar to Father Christmas or Santa Claus, but ‘Sinterklaas’ (Saint Nicholas) is a very Dutch character loved by children and adults alike. His arrival in Amsterdam in mid-November each year traditionally marks the official start of the city's festive season. The start of the arrival will be by boat this year. Sinterklaas will board the Steamboat with the Pieten, sailing from the Omval via the Amstel to the Maritime Museum.
Here, Sinterklaas receives the key to the city of Amsterdam from Mayor Halsema and the children's mayor. After Sinterklaas has gone ashore, he continues his journey on horseback, starting at Waterlooplein. The route takes him via Rembrandtplein, Utrechtsestraat and Weteringschans to Leidseplein. There will be a stage on the bustling Leidseplein to introduce the arrival of Sinterklaas festively.
