The Parrot - Saint Joseph Church
Roman Catholic church - Silence centre "quarter for God". Church with 2 entrances (Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 293 and Kalverstraat 58). Roman Catholic church that was a clandestine church during the Reformation. The church was founded in 1672.
Hidden surprise
The church is one of Amsterdam's hidden surprises. Around 1672, a Roman Catholic church was founded on the site by the Jesuit priest Augustus van Teylingen, in the house De Papegaai.
During this time of the Reformation, Roman Catholics were not allowed to practice their faith in a building that was recognizable as a church from the public road. That is why this church is hidden behind the houses of the Kalverstraat.
