Discover the Garden City Slotermeer

During this guided walk, you will walk through the Garden City Slotermeer, the outdoor museum of the Van Eesteren Museum. Slotermeer was built starting in 1951 to the design of Cornelis van Eesteren, then head of the Urban Development Department and namesake of the museum. In the outdoor museum, you discover how the ideals of light, air and space took shape. The neighbourhood is part of the AUP, Amsterdam’s General Expansion Plan of 1935, which formed the basis of the garden cities built after World War II. In 2008, part of the neighbourhood was declared Amsterdam’s first postwar municipal protected cityscape.

What do those ideals of the future from then mean today? How do we recognize the terms light, air and space? During this walk we will tell you with how much attention, thinking and idealism the construction of this neighbourhood came about. We let you look with different eyes at this highlight of modern urban planning in the Netherlands.
