Ilona Plaum - Presence
Huis Marseille presents Presence, the first institutional solo exhibition of the Dutch artist Ilona Plaum. For this exhibition, the museum and Plaum are going all out: 40 works will be on display, some from the Huis Marseille collection, some existing work and some new work created especially for the exhibition. In Presence, Plaum lets the visitor descend into her poetic universe, in which she unsettles our perception. Only when you start to doubt, you come across an indisputable truth: doubt makes you observe and lets you experience that you exist.
Ilona Plaum - Presence
Work that shakes up your perception
Plaum connects her three-dimensional models, painted representations and the photographic flat surface with each other in illusions. In these illusions she uses the rules of paradox: she alternates between surface and depth perception and makes the background the foreground; shadows become tangible and seem to move. Plaum thus takes the viewer from invented to existing spaces and vice versa. Through deliberate imperfections that are visible in the work, it becomes clear that the elements are made by hand. For a moment this takes the viewer back to the starting point of the work, the moment it was made by the artist.
