The voice of the creator
Holland Festival and De Balie are jointly creating a program that focuses on the work of the author, theatre director and filmmaker Christiane Jatahy. She is this year's associate artist of the Holland Festival. Since 2019, the Holland Festival has enjoyed working with a changing associate artist every year.
The associate artist represents the maker's voice, is a source of inspiration and has been a discussion partner for the program team for over a year. The new and old work of the associate artists will be shown, and a tailor-made project will be developed in the city.
The dialogue with this maker leads to further choices for other artists and performances in the festival. In this way, the Holland Festival audience becomes acquainted with this maker's oeuvre and 'universe'. In De Balie, Christiane Jatahy will talk to local speakers about the art and stories that have shaped her artistic practice.
Where is the line between reality and fiction? What is power? Which structures guide society? These questions are central to her work, exploring the border between artistic disciplines. She also zooms in on the projects with which she is present at the festival.
Associate artist Christiane Jatahy
Christiane Jatahy is called a 'hard and sharp observer of the violent cruelty of our world' (jury report Golden Lion, Venice Biennale). She strives for connection, dialogue and social change through her work.
Her artistic signature is a cinematic way of working on stage, using cameras to create both distance and proximity, thus changing our perspective. The part of the festival program that was put together in consultation with Jatahy embraces the eclectic character of her work. We invite all kinds of (mainly Brazilian) makers – from theatre makers and choreographers to musicians and DJs.
Some are regular collaborators of Jatahy, and others have inspired her thinking about art and the role of art in society. Together, they provide an intriguing look at what is happening now – on stage and beyond – in Brazil and the rest of the world. More about Christiane Jatahy
