The symbolism of the Waringin tree
The Waringin tree, recognizable by its stately appearance and mysterious aerial roots, is a plant that is common on various islands in Indonesia. It is the roots in this country that connect. This evening is dedicated to a younger generation of artists in the Netherlands who have roots in present-day Indonesia. They will discuss their search for relief for the pain that colonialism has caused for their ancestors. What is the influence of colonialism on descendants in the Netherlands? How do we view intergenerational trauma? The younger generations in the Netherlands are increasingly finding the space to explore their background and make the stories of their ancestors visible. In what ways do they do this? In what ways does art play a role in this? During this evening they will reflect on the colonial period and the various pains that it has caused for various communities with roots in present-day Indonesia. Art and the stories that come to light are central to this.
