Do you ever paint pictures in your mind when you listen to music? Or make up a story to go with it? That’s what this concert is all about. Listening is very important – if no one is listening, the music only partly exists. You, as a listener, make the music whole. Storyteller Sahand Sahebdivani is our guide, while the musicians perform a variety of thrilling 20th-century compositions. Some pieces will sound unlike anything you have heard before. And they all tell a different story. Which story? Let your imagination run wild!

There is music about the sunrise and about nighttime sounds, and a composition where each musician is limited to a single note. And it sounds wonderful! Together with the rest of the audience you will experience a musical meditation created by composer Pauline Oliveros. And master violinist Joe Puglia, joined by conservatory students, performs several short duets by composer Luciano Berio. In these, Berio painted portraits of his friends – with sound, of course. Every nook and cranny of the Muziekgebouw is filled with music this afternoon. Or with silence. Because silence is a form of music too.
