About the mobility industry in Amsterdam
The capital of eco-friendly mobility options

From the outside looking in – Amsterdam is internationally recognised for its extensive 515 kilometre network of cycle paths, seamlessly integrated into the urban landscape and serving as the primary mode of transportation for most residents.
However, the city’s efforts in smart mobility go far beyond bikes. Amsterdam is at the forefront of innovation, advancing sustainable transport solutions to improve efficiency and achieve its ambitious goal of becoming fully circular by 2050.
As a densely populated city, efficient transport is a must as the population rises – with smart mobility solutions needed for infrastructure optimisation as well as to combat the lack of space. At the same time, rising energy scarcity and the need for more efficient mobility solutions are more urgent than ever.
A longtime mobility pioneer

To ensure Amsterdam remains liveable, the city is prioritising reliable, accessible and climate-friendly transport options. And Amsterdam has been leading innovative mobility solutions for decades.
As early as the 1970s, the city launched the world’s first electric car-sharing program, laying the foundation for the tech-based shared mobility solutions we know today. Decades later, the city has remained a global leader in sustainable mobility, ranking fourth in Europe for zero emission and shared transport initiatives in 2023.
Smart mobility options across the city include Felyx electric scooter rentals for short trips and GreenWheels and MyWheels who provide electric cars for longer journeys. To ease congestion, Amsterdam is also developing smart mobility hubs with EIT Mobility - integrating several transport modes to make sustainable travel more accessible.
Amsterdam: where smart mobility solutions grow

With over 40 smart mobility startups based in Amsterdam, the city has cultivated a strong ecosystem of entrepreneurs, innovators, universities, and businesses dedicated to creating smart solutions that assist the advancement of urban mobility.
Companies like Fastned provide fast-charging stations for electric vehicles, while Pluq specialise in cost-effective destination charging. These companies sit amidst brands like Roetz Bikes, VanMoof and ParkBee all changing the landscape of urban transport and headquartered in the Dutch capital.
It’s not just businesses that put Amsterdam on the map. Amsterdam is the centre of knowledge for smart mobility solutions advancements, and putting them into practice. The AMS Institute leads projects tackling urban mobility challenges, including Roboat who are developing the world's first fleet of autonomous boats to upgrade the city’s waterways with smart navigation.
In addition, organisations like MRA Smart Mobility bring companies, government and institutions together to shape policy and drive innovation in the mobility scene.
