Grote kerk

Grote of Sint Nicolaas Kerk

The Grote Kerk is the most iconic historic building in Monnickendam. The Grote Kerk is a three-hall church. The roofs of the three halls rest on the outer walls and on 24 pillars. The almost ten meter wide oak choir screen is one of the showpieces of the Grote Kerk. The church can be visited from mid-May to the end of September. The church belongs to the Protestant community of Monnickendam.

Flamenco Biennale Nederland

The Flamenco Biennale Netherlands is an international performing arts festival with one of Europes oldest art forms, flamenco, at its heart. Since 2006, it has focussed on the latest developments in the genre and offers a sample of contemporary flamenco art, with performances and concerts where the tradition enters into exciting alliances and cross-pollinations with contemporary dance and jazz, classical, baroque, and oriental music.

Smaakhuis Lisse

Founded in 2007, Smaakhuis (‘flavour house’) stocks a variety of tasty locally-produced delicacies. Smaakhuis is where you’ll find extraordinary treats. Think local beers with floral notes, tulip chocolates, and colourful teas made from local flowers. You’ll find a wide variety of traditional Dutch cheeses including some from Lisse. What’s more, they also sell some imported products and stock fresh nuts, a selection of olive oils and wine. Smaakhuis is the perfect place to buy exceptional culinary gifts – or tasty treats for yourself.

Trompettersteeg (narrowest street in Amsterdam)

The Trompettersteeg is Amsterdam’s narrowest street at only 100 centimetres wide. Despite its small size, it’s one of the busiest alleys in Amsterdam thanks to its location in the middle of the Red Light District.

Singelkerk

The Singelkerk is a Mennonite church. The building is a wonderful example of the so-called “clandestine churchs”. They got this name because from the street, it was not apparent that the building housed a church.

Sint Olofskapel

The original Sint Olofskapel (Saint Olof’s chapel) was built between 1440 and 1450, making it the oldest chapel in Amsterdam. It was built in honor of saint was Saint Odulphus from the Dutch province of Brabant – the patron saint of the dykes. Currently, the chapel serves as conference centre for the NH Barbizon Palace Hotel. It is connected directly to the hotel with an underground corridor.

Coptic Orthodox Church (Heilige Maagd Maria Kerk)

The Dutch Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates the holy Eucharist every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. A large part of the service is sung, according to Coptic rites and melodies (in Dutch).

Magere Brug

Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge)

One of Amsterdam’s many bridges is the beautiful Magere Brug, known to English speakers at the Skinny Bridge. This wooden drawbridge was once so narrow that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass each other. To cope with increasing traffic on the Amstel, a wider bridge replaced the narrow original in 1871.

The Torensluis

The Torensluis (tower lock) looks like an excessively wide bridge over the Singel. The reason for such a spacious set-up was the Jan Roodenpoortstoren (tower) which stood here until 1829. The prisons under the tower were recently restored and are now open to the public. They are also used to host exhibitions and events literally underground.

Bicycle flat

Since 2001, Stationsplein at Amsterdam's Central Station boasts the world's first bicycle flat. The building has room for 2500 bicycles, and the top level offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

Dominicuskerk

Dominicuskerk (Dominican church)

The Dominicans are a religious community that derives its inspiration from the Christian tradition. The Dominicuskerk is a religious workshop and spiritual centre for people of all denominations, be it Protestant, Catholic or non-practicing.

Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA)

Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is the city’s official port for cruise ships. Occasionally for naval vessels arrive here as well. An eye-catching building on the IJ River, PTA welcomes about 200,000 passengers annually and also serves as an impressive event venue.

Vondelkerk

The charming Vondelkerk (Vondel Church) stands at the edge of the Vondelpark and was used as a church from 1880 to 1977. Today it houses the offices of a few small businesses. The beautiful former church space also hosts concerts and is rented out for special occasions, including weddings, formal dinners and meetings.

Willem de Zwijgerkerk

The monumental Willem de Zwijgerkerk (church) in the district of Amsterdam Zuid was built in 1930 in the “Amsterdamse School” style. The interior of this protestant church was completely restored in 1995. Besides holding religious services, the church plays an active role in the community. It is often rented out for cultural or community-related events.

Slavernijmonument

Slavernijmonument (slavery monument)

The Netherlands officially abolished slavery in the colonies of Suriname and the Dutch Antilles in July 1863. In 2002 (139 years later), Surinamese sculptor Erwin de Vries was selected to design a memorial for this dark period. The sculpture is located in the Oosterpark and is made up of three elements. The first represents slavery’s dark and dramatic history, the second represents breaking through the wall of resistance in the modern day, and the third element represents the longing for freedom and a better future.

Visitors to the city can find information and souvenirs in the museum shop, next to the Purmerends Museum. The offer consists of information leaflets about the city and souvenirs.
