Bartók & Beyond Asko|Schönberg & Joseph Puglia
In the Asko|Schönberg series & Beyond in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, violinist Joseph Puglia always takes a composer as a starting point and examines the influences and relationships with other composers. This time, he explores the boundaries of classical music from the Hungarian composer Bla Bartók (1882-1945). Bartók collected thousands of folk melodies from his native country, but also from Algeria and Turkey, for example. He incorporated this folk music into his own compositions. He wrote his trio Contrasts for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. As one of the most leading composers of the 20th century, Bartók consciously stepped outside the classical paths.
