Compound

The Gandharva Quartet consists of Shamita Achenbach-Knig, Bhoiravi Achenbach and Dohai Achenbach, all from Vienna, and pianist Vapushtara Matthijs Jongepier from Amsterdam. The name of the ensemble refers to the gandharvas, heavenly musicians from Indian mythology who played for the gods. The four musicians are classically trained and the Austrian members are part of the ORF radio symphony orchestra Vienna and the Wiener Symphonikern.

Sri Chinmoy

The Gandharva Quartet is dedicated to the music of Maestro Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007), who was not only a composer but also a poet, artist and spiritual teacher. Sri Chinmoy composed over 23,000 spiritual songs, which described the full spectrum of the spiritual seeker's journey to union with the divine source. His music was praised by Leonard Bernstein and Ravi Shankar, among others, with whom Sri Chinmoy had deep friendships.
