Schubert and Coleridge Taylor: octet and nonet

The successful composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was the son of a white English woman and a black man from Sierra Leone, a descendant of American slaves. Coleridge-Taylor felt connected to the music of black communities in America. This radical component of American culture gave us visionaries like Duke Ellington and Scott Joplin. On concert tours Coleridge-Taylor met musicians from this circle. For his Nonet , a youthful work, he was inspired by Schubert's magnificent Octet .
