Exhibition: Medieval Amsterdam
Life in the Middle Ages
Starting on 7 March 2025, the Stadsarchief Amsterdam will open its doors to a unique exhibition that brings the city's medieval history to life. Based on recent archaeological and historical research, this exhibition will provide visitors with a detailed insight into the daily lives of Amsterdammers in the Middle Ages. The highlight? The facial reconstruction of 'the first Amsterdammer' from around the year 1200!
The exhibition takes you on a journey through time, revealing how the city was founded and grew. You will see how people lived, worked, and built their community. Significant events, such as the Tolprivilege of 1275, which stimulated Amsterdam's economic growth, are also highlighted.
The Tolprivilege
The Tolprivilege of 27 October 1275 is a historical document that granted the residents of the then 'Amstelledamme' (now Amsterdam) exemption from tolls for transporting their goods over the waterways of the County of Holland. This privilege was crucial for the settlement's economic growth, as it allowed traders to transport their goods without extra costs, thereby stimulating trade and the growth of Amsterdam.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Amsterdam's rich history in a whole new way. For more information, visit Stadsarchief Amsterdam.
