600 Years of History
Like an autobiography, De Nieuwe Kerk (1408) tells its centuries-old history, closely tied to that of the Netherlands and Amsterdam. Many stories are shared and depicted, such as the inaugurations of the Oranges and the wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander and Máxima. The iconoclasm, the never-built tower, and Pieter Gerritsz's unique sixteenth-century model painting are also highlighted.
Tales from the Middle Ages, Dutch seafarers of the seventeenth century, and murals from the church's Roman Catholic period are featured. Visitors can also admire the permanent interior pieces by famous artists, such as Johannes Lutma’s brass choir screen. Though the organ and pulpit are wrapped for restoration, they remain visible through transparent coverings.
