What is the best building in Amsterdam?

Every year, a professional jury and a public jury reward the building that, in their opinion, is the most inspiring building in Amsterdam. This year the AAP will be awarded for the 17th time. Ten buildings compete for the prize every year.

Arcam and the Arcam Program Council have chosen these projects from approximately 120 buildings that will be completed in 2023. Particular attention was paid to architectural and urban development quality, the program, innovative typology, progressive ambitions, distribution across the city and whether they are an important addition to the city.

Impoverishment

What was striking about the buildings that were dropped was the impoverishment and dominance of spreadsheets and building envelopes. At a time when building is becoming increasingly expensive, homes are becoming smaller and the quality of materials, finishes, outdoor space and collective space is declining.

The ten projects show that it is possible: designing good, original buildings for (future) Amsterdam residents with attention to sustainability, quality of life and affordability. The selection represents what kind of city Amsterdam should be: a sustainable, fair, affordable, healthy and beautiful city.

Trends

The jury sees three trends. Circularity and reuse are an important theme in office buildings and workshops in the city. In housing construction, there is a lot of experimentation with efficient floor plans and new forms of living. And in mixed projects, the opportunity to meet each other is an important point of attention.
