Historic day

Heri Heri is considered a delicacy today but is known as a common dish cooked by many of our enslaved ancestors on plantations around the world during the transatlantic slave trade. In memory of our ancestors and in commemoration of the abolition of slavery by the Dutch Kingdom, Free Heri Heri was created to draw attention to this historic day, its history and its consequences that are still felt today.

What is the dish Heri Heri?

Heri Heri is a Surinamese dish that originated from what was grown and eaten on the plantations by the enslaved ancestors. In indigenous cuisine and in various African cuisines, similar dishes that combine earth fruits and fish appear to have existed even before slavery. The dish as we know it now consists of boiled sweet potato, cassava, yellow and green (fried) banana, salted fish (fried cod), an egg and garnish.
