IDFA: Didy - Gaël Kamilindi, François Xavier Destors

A thoughtful and sensitive portrait of filmmaker Gaël Kamilindi’s mother, Didy, who died when he was 5 years old. Kamilindi sets out to trace her history by travelling from Switzerland, where he grew up, back to their home country of Rwanda. Using the memories of Didy’s 3 sisters and others who knew her well, he builds a picture of a strong, fearless and independent woman.

Closer to his mother, his home

At the same time, the film is about the violent history of Rwanda, where the Tutsis suffered from the hatred of Hutu extremism, which erupted horribly at various times. In addition to the conversations with and between his aunts, Kamilindi films the overwhelming landscape of his early childhood and the artistic rituals he performs to get closer to his mother, his homeland and his origins. He always uses the natural, sometimes enchanting light - which reveals a dark past, but also an unprecedented beauty and resilience.
