From animal to human

During the show, the audience sees the female solo artist transform from animal to human. In the human incarnation, she is visited by the horned mask – ‘Magnus’, who calls upon her to transform herself. With his help, she becomes a mythological creature, part human, part animal and part primordial god.

Inspired by the timeless wisdom of fairy tales, mythology and ancient cultures, Dreams of the Small Gods combines aerial circus, performance art and masked rituals to create a surreal, hypnotic world. In a requiem for lost wisdom, it questions human ideas of holiness and blasphemy, and explores the relationship between humans, animals and those we call our gods.

Biography

Performer and maker Zinnia Oberski has an extensive circus background. She uses elements of physical theatre, dance and performance art to disrupt the traditional circus aesthetic of the superhuman and focus on a power that can only be accessed through vulnerability. Zinnia’s performance style is a communication style that is less literal than words and therefore well suited to conveying ideas that relate to the subconscious or animal mind. She graduated from Circomedia (BTEC) in 2011 and from ACaPA, Fontys (BA) in 2016.

Please note: Although De Krakeling is a youth theatre venue, Zinnia's beautiful contemporary performance is suitable for an audience of 18 years and older. The performance is part of the Amsterdam Fringe Festival and therefore has a different target audience than our regular programme. It contains nudity and spicy themes. Theater De Krakeling is a brand new Fringe venue, born out of the necessity to house artist Zinnia Oberski, after a last-minute cancellation of a previous venue.
