Artists Against the Kremlin
In August 2024 De Balie, All Rights Reversed Art and The Moscow Times organized Artists Against the Kremlin, a large-scale anti-war and dissident art exhibition featuring over 100 works by Russian-speaking artists opposing war and authoritarianism. Following the successful exhibition there is now a full catalog. Today we present the book and speak with several artists who contributed.

Talking about the book
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the number of imprisoned artists in Russia has grown. Artist Sasha Skochilenko spent 2 years in a labor camp for an action where she replaced store price tags with anti-war stickers, including some where the prices were replaced by the number of casualties from the war in Ukraine.
The secret services began monitoring artists, conducting interrogations, and threatening searches. As a result, many artists fled Russia, while those who stayed are forced to work underground, constantly risking arrest.
Russian protest art remains invisible to both fellow citizens due to censorship in Russia and to international audiences. With Artists Against the Kremlin we show and affirm the existence of a broad anti-war movement, in and outside Russia.
