Italian Design Day 2024

The Embassy of Italy in the Netherlands and the Italian Cultural Institute Amsterdam present “IDD – Italian Design Day 2024”. The Italian Design Day (IDD) is an event promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation since 2017, dedicated to Italian design and the worldwide promotion of Italian talents in this field.

It is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the Ministry and MiBACT, MISE, ICE Agency, Confindustria, the Industrial Design Association ADI, Fondazione ADI-Compasso d'Oro, Federlegno Arredo, Salone del Mobile Milano and Triennale Milano.

As part of this Design Day, Italian embassies and Italian Cultural Institutes worldwide host “design ambassadors” who present the best of Italian design. This year, the ambassadors selected in the Netherlands are Elisa Giaccardi, professor at the Technical University in Milan and Giulia Calabretta, associate professor at TU Delft. The title they have chosen for this year's edition is "Design Next".

DESIGN NEXT

The world is in crisis. There are numerous complicated challenges, ranging from climate change and surveillance capitalism to algorithmic discrimination and the rise of a post-truth society. Designers typically strive for positive transformation, but what if the conventional view of design inadvertently contributes to the problems we are trying to address?

What if the nature of design, as currently understood, is part of the problem rather than the solution? This reflection prompts us to rethink approaches to design and design methodologies. It encourages us to explore alternative paths that better align with sustainability principles and inclusivity in a deeply interconnected world that can no longer be designed just for humans.

The discussion will be moderated by Elisa Giaccardi from the Technical University of Milan and Giulia Calabretta from TU Delft, who will explore new understandings of design and possible professional roles.
