Do safer vehicles make our streets less safe?
Vehicle speeds. Whether cars, trucks, or e-bikes, they profoundly effect our lives in the city. What it means to go too fast or too slow often depends on the place we occupy in traffic. Traditionally, fixed speed limits have been the solution. However, these don’t account for the dynamic nature of urban spaces and its novel vehicle types. Unsafe streets push people into safer vehicles, which means we stop pushing for safer streets. To create a safer living environment, we need to rethink our approach to speed regulation that accounts for the complexity of urban life.
