Faith in Film

With the motto Faith in Cinema, De Nieuwe Kerk has put together a broad and varied program. They're showcasing timeless classics like The Name of the Rose (1986), based on the famous book by Umberto Eco. In 1984, he gave a cautionary lecture in the church about our view of the Middle Ages and the lessons we can learn from it. That was before the film adaptation of his renowned book.

But, the program goes broader: the spiritual film Life of Pi (2012) is paired with the satirical Life of Brian (1979). And, of course, the Disney classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) is not to be missed—a small homage to the sister church in Paris, which has recently been beautifully restored. The opening film, The King’s Speech, will be introduced by Rommy Albers, curator at the EYE Filmmuseum.
