Na de Dam Producties & Artis - Theater Na de Dam: Duif in Artis Theater
During the German occupation, an estimated 200 to 300 people hid in Artis for a longer or shorter period of time, assisted by the director and caretakers. The zoo's virtually unknown wartime past is illuminated from various perspectives. Writers Tom Lanoye, Alfred Schaffer and Jolanda van den Berg each wrote a new monologue about Artis' history of hiding, our interactions with each other and our tendency to dehumanise each other. In 2023, Theater Na de Dam presented the performance as a location performance in Artis. Now they are reprising the performance once, especially for (and in) Frascati. NB The end time mentioned is an indication.

Artis
Compared to most other Dutch zoos, Artis fared well during the occupation. The park remained open throughout the war, with the exception of one single day, and was even well-visited, both by the Germans and by the people of Amsterdam. The occupier, the person in hiding and the staff moved past each other, with the animals as 'silent' witnesses.
'Those Krauts love animals, we love animals.' Armand Sunier (director of Artis from 1927 to 1953)
