National Opera - The Four Note Opera
Inspired by the meta-theatre of Luigi Pirandello, composer Tom Johnson wrote a piece for a group of singers with only four notes at their disposal (A, B, D and E) and can sing about nothing other than the opera they are currently attending. Of course, that situation is untenable: the opera ends in total rigidity. The Four Note Opera can be seen in the Dutch National Opera & Ballet.

50 years ago, the Four Note Opera was a teasing commentary on the conventions of the opera world. What about today? Has the piece itself become a tired repertoire, or is the criticism still relevant? Because how much control do today's singers actually have over the roles they sing? And how much control do opera makers have over their own creative process?
