National Opera - The Shell Trial
In 2021, oil giant Shell was held legally responsible for its role in climate change. In The Shell Trial, the various voices in the climate debate come to the fore, and it becomes increasingly clear that we cannot make progress with endless finger-pointing. This topical opera, at the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, shows that the climate crisis is, above all, a crisis of responsibility.
National Opera - The Shell Trial
Who is responsible for the climate crisis?
The Shell Trial is based on the play The Shell Case by Rebekka de Wit and Anoek Nuyens, which premiered in 2020 and was very popular on Dutch and international stages. Different voices and perspectives within the climate crisis are discussed, with the complexity of the matter coming increasingly clear to the fore. The boundaries between guilty and victim, good and evil and individual and collective responsibility are blurring as more and more points of view are put on the table.
