The Romeo
Imagine if there was one dance for everyone, inspired by a world as it could have been. With The Romeo, choreographer Trajal Harrell represents this dance for all people, regardless of background, gender, character or mood and of any generation. This program is part of the Holland Festival and can be seen at International Theater Amsterdam.
The Romeo
A mix of atmospheres and styles
Harrell is influenced by many different movements for his moving, refined and sensual dance style, from contemporary dance, vogue, Japanese butoh and ancient Greek theatre to performance art. It doesn't matter where exactly The Romeo comes from.
Together with his regular group of dancers, Harrell creates a mix of atmospheres and styles with many changes in costumes and music - from Satie to Pink Floyd. It is an attempt to uncover histories that have not previously been brought to the fore. It's a 'what if...'; a historical speculation cast in a dance style.
Just like the young lover in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, who in his enthusiasm believed that he could conquer death, this dance will also feel as if it belongs to everyone and has always been there.
