Science and entertainment come together at Science & Cocktails, where knowledge is served with a twist—literally. Hosted at Tolhuistuin in Noord, these evenings are a relaxed and informal way to learn. City Talks at International Theatre Amsterdam gives an insider's view into the city’s creative pulse. This "sip & talk" show spotlights Amsterdam’s talented innovators and change-makers, as each edition presents a fresh perspective on the ever-evolving city. Designed to be an interactive experience, City Talks encourages attendees to grab a drink, join the conversation, and explore the complexities of contemporary urban life—and best of all, it’s entirely free of charge.

Describing itself as a “cultural home for the curious soul,” Felix Meritis was founded in the 18th century to explore social issues across science, art, and entrepreneurship, and it has remained true to its mission. SPUI25

Bright minds come together at SPUI25, with over 250 events hosted annually. A haven for the intellectually curious, this academic centre in the historic heart of the city attracts some of the best thinkers in the world of science, literature, and art. SPUI25 prides itself on variety: from modern psychoanalysis to the impact of fashion on society, and debates on the ethics of data ownership, its upcoming program has something for everyone. Headlining the program, you’ll find iconic leaders in contemporary thought, such as Judith Butler.

The Public Library of Amsterdam offers more than your next favourite book—it’s a cultural hotspot with 28 locations across the city. These aren’t just cosy places to lose yourself in a good novel; they’re buzzing with events and talks that have a love of literature at their heart. A highlight of the OBA’s program is “Writers and Soup”, where you can enjoy a hearty bowl of soup while an author reads from their latest work. Alternatively, the Open Podium, held every Saturday, allows anyone to share their original work, up to 600 words, with an audience. Whether it’s literature, storytelling, or readings, the OBA is where Amsterdam’s literary spirit thrives.

Nexus Institute

The Nexus Institute, known for its annual conference and a series of captivating talks throughout the year, is an organisation committed to deep engagement with the world around us. Nexus dives into Europe’s cultural heritage through the lenses of art, science, politics, philosophy, and history. De Nieuwe Liefde

Describing itself as a house for language in the broadest sense of the word, De Nieuwe Liefde is a platform focused on literature, the arts, and social issues. From spoken word performances to explorations of poetry from all over the world, De Nieuwe Liefde offers new voices and perspectives in its picturesque location on a canal in Oud-West. Hands-on workshops, creative collaborations, and readings are all part of the program here, truly living up to its vision as a place that celebrates language.

Pakhuis de Zwijger

This former warehouse on the IJ is a special part of Amsterdam’s architectural history. Still, more importantly, it serves as a venue where political, humanitarian, and cultural conversations come to life. Since 2006, this dynamic platform for debates, lectures, and performances has been sparking social innovation. Not simply a lecture house, Pakhuis de Zwijger’s program ranges from film screenings to stand-up comedy and poetry nights, offering a blend of creativity and discussion.

Embassy of the Free Mind

In the heart of Amsterdam, a 17th-century canal mansion houses the Embassy of the Free Mind—a sanctuary for wisdom seekers. This unique museum, with a library holding over 2,000 years' worth of philosophical, religious and scientific ideas, once served as a gathering place for foremost philosophers and free thinkers. Today, the Embassy continues this legacy, hosting public talks, readings, and occasional theatre performances. Visitors are invited to explore the beautifully ornate rooms and discover the web of meanings that connect history, science, art, and spirituality.
