Avantium and UvA come together to research solution for recycling polycotton

Avantium, an Amsterdam-based company, has developed a method with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to separate cotton from polyester in polycotton fabrics using hydrochloric acid. This new method makes textile recycling easier and reduces pollution, which is contributing to the climate crisis.

A big step forward in fashion

Amsterdam-based company Avantium was founded in 2000 and specialises in renewable chemistry technologies. Their work is focused on developing new processes and sustainable materials, particularly materials that are focused on bio-based plastics. Together with the Industrial Sustainable Chemistry group at the University of Amsterdam, they have created a method that uses hydrochloric acid to convert the cotton in polycotton fabric into glucose while leaving the polyester untouched.

Why is this new method important?

The clothing industry's overproduction has emerged as a leading cause of climate change and plastic pollution. Studies from the European Parliament show that Europeans use about 26 kilos of textiles annually and dispose of around 11 kilos. Furthermore, textile production contributes to 20% of global clean water pollution, mainly from dyeing and finishing products.

Due to the different components that make up modern-day textiles, it can be difficult to properly recycle the materials. This is where Avantium and UvA’s new method comes in. Not only does it separate cotton from polyester in polycotton fabric, but the glucose produced from the hydrochloric acid can be used for various industries such as feedstock, while the polyester remains intact to be completely recycled.

Amsterdam and the future of fashion

Avantium joins a thriving community of companies who are at the forefront of the future of fashion who reside in Amsterdam. Brands such as Silent Wave Indigo who focus on one of a kind pieces made from repurposed denim. MUD Jeans are another fashion forward brand based in Amsterdam who offer a leasing programme to promote circular fashion.

Aside from brands, Fashion For Good is a global platform promoting sustainable fashion practices. Given the wealth of sustainable innovation rooted in Amsterdam, it's clear that the Netherlands is a key player in efforts to protect our planet.
