Funding future-focused innovation

On September 12, the Japanese-European VC firm NordicNinja announced the expansion of their interest in Northern Europe with the establishment of a €200M fund. Initially focused on the Nordic region and Baltic states, the venture capital powerhouse is expanding its horizons to support startups in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxemburg (BeNeLux), as well as the UK and Ireland with a focus on climate tech, deeptech, and digital society.

Track record of impactful investments

NordicNinja launched their first fund of €101M back in 2019, primarily focused on smart mobility – an industry with room to grow when it comes to user experience and carbon emissions. From this initial fund 20 investments have been made, with 3 of these achieving unicorn status and others showing similar potential. Some companies already on NordicNinja’s rooster include fast-growing urban mobility app Bolt, autonomous electric transport system Einride, and innovative climate transition platform ClimateView

The company believes that the transition to a more sustainable and equitable world will be driven by the developments going on in Northern Europe. The region's history of digital innovation and reputation for enterprise building can help lead a shift global practices, especially when coupled with Japan's worldwide network of investors and partners.

Fuelling the Dutch tech sector with fresh funds

With this second €200M fund NordicNinja will invest in early-stage founders, writing checks between €3M to €5M with the aim of cultivating responsible innovation and advancement in impactful technology. While the first fund focused heavily on mobility, this second fund will expand to other sustainability areas, looking at companies making waves in deep tech, climate action, and digitisation.

On November 22, Nordic Ninja will make its presence on the Dutch market official with an event in Amsterdam. This event serves as an invitation to all aspiring entrepreneurs and startups with groundbreaking ideas to come forward and explore the possibilities of collaboration.

“Despite the challenging tax conditions for Dutch startups, high inflation and recession, we have full confidence in the Dutch innovative power and are determined to contribute to the competitiveness of the Dutch startup ecosystem. We look forward to adding a Dutch startup to our portfolio."
- Tomosaku Sohara, Managing Partner at NordicNinja
