Netherlands ranks #1 in the new Global Index on Responsible AI
Dutch efforts lead in responsible AI
The recently launched Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) has placed the Netherlands at number #1 - showcasing the country as a forerunner in the responsible use of artificial intelligence. With a high score of 86.16, the Netherlands is categorised as using its influence to advance international cooperation in bridging the AI divide and implementing specific legal enforcement frameworks to address key areas of AI and human rights.
The Global Index on Responsible AI is a comprehensive study measuring progress toward responsible AI practices across 138 countries. It examines 19 thematic areas grouped into three clusters: Human Rights and AI, Responsible AI Governance, and Responsible AI Capacities.
Local researchers asked over 1,800 questions, resulting in the collection of more than 2 million data points, which were then analysed by scientists and organisations. The Index assesses each thematic area based on three pillars of the responsible AI ecosystem: government frameworks, government actions, and non-state actors' initiatives.
Key findings for the future of AI
The report highlights that international cooperation is crucial for deploying and using responsible AI, which will enhance the safety, security, and reliability currently lacking in AI systems. While there are adequate safeguards for workers in AI-driven economies, universities and civil society must collaborate to advance dependable AI and drive global progress. The report also indicates a considerable journey ahead to achieve adequate levels of responsible AI worldwide.
The Netherlands scored an 86.16 in the GIRAI, while 67% of countries scored below 25 and 25% scored between 25 and 50. This means nearly 6 billion people live in countries without adequate AI-related human rights protections. Critical areas needing improvement include gender equality, labor protections, the right to work, public participation and awareness, public sector skills, development, competition authorities, and children's rights.
Fast growing AI community in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a growing hub for AI and tech over various sectors from climate tech to life and health sciences. It is home to Amsterdam AI a coalition of partners that drive progress through pioneering research, innovative education, and creative, multidisciplinary collaborations. The AI companies calling the Dutch capital home are draw global attention and investment including €100 million for its Climate Tech Portfolio Fund II. As well as CuspAI who recently received €28 million to research CO2-binding materials.
Universities are also involved in this dynamic AI community, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) announced recently its research into AI and sustainable molecules and materials. Bringing the community together in Amsterdam is AiSalon a global collective of AI innovators, who officially launched in the Dutch capital last week. Simultaneously they create a vibrant ecosystem in Amsterdam for AI and tech applications.
