Jazz en de Walvis is celebrating its 10th anniversary! That is why the festival is treating you to a free concert by Dyar and Han van 't Land to start the festival day at 12:30 in the Kompaszaal. Children and their parents can play along during this concert! There is a free closing concert at 18:00 with the Lilian Viera Grupo. Also in the Komaszaal. Everyone is welcome!

The Canterbury Songs

Join us on a journey to the fairytale Canterbury, to the England of the 16th century. A breathtaking landscape inspired the medieval writer Geoffrey Chaucer around 1400 to write his famous work 'The Canterbury Tales'. Based on Chaucer's epic book, conductor Peter Phillips and the Netherlands Chamber Choir will perform the most beautiful madrigals and motets from that time. A programme interwoven with newly written miniature compositions by the English composer William Knight.

In What We Trust - I Solisti & Vlaams Radiokoor

What will the world of tomorrow look like? What do faith and meaning mean today? These are hot topics now that our future is under pressure from all sides. The wind players of I Solisti, regular guests at the Muziekgebouw, will present a programme on contemporary questions together with the Flemish Radio Choir. In addition to the irresistibly grand 'Mass in E' by Anton Bruckner – a deeply religious man – a new work by Frederik Neyrinck, artist in residence of I Solisti, will be heard. Poet Maud Vanhauwaert guarantees a compelling script.

Oded Tzur Quartet

New York-based saxophonist Oded Tzur has transformed his sound into what The Guardian describes as a "unique tenor sax whisper." Tzur refers to this development in his playing and tone as a ten-year deep dive that has established him as one of the leading figures in spiritual jazz. According to the New York City Jazz Record, his music is like an interactive prayer that can move in any direction.

American Roots - Nederlands Blazers Ensemble

The Netherlands Wind Ensemble (NBE) delves deep into the heart of American music. Together with Native American singer Charly Lowry, musical phenomenon and descendant of the Tuscarora Indian Nation, the NBE searches for the beauty of Native American culture. 'We are the land' is the fundamental premise of that culture, in which people feel at one with nature.

Yoràn Vroom Group of Friends ft. Mehdi Nassouli

With Group Of Friends, Yoràn Vroom presents his own work from his albums 'Across A Spectrum” (2021) and 'A Forgotten Story' (2023). The music of 'Across A Spectrum' is mainly about the richness of Caribbean culture, to which the musicians give their own view with collective improvisation as a common denominator.

Benjamin Herman ft. Sean Payne & Miguel Valente

In October 2024, it will be 13 years since Piet Noordijk passed away. From Rotterdam pubs to large halls with the Metropole Orchestra, he held them in his grip with his effervescent saxophone playing, making him one of the trendsetters of Dutch jazz. 3 excellent alto saxophonists – Benjamin Herman, Sean Payne and Miguel Valente – pay tribute to their famous colleague, accompanied by pianist Francesca Tandoi, double bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky and drummer Sander Smeets during this 4th edition of the European Alto Festival.

Songs that search for points of light in the darkness between complaint, regret and hope are so beautiful. Countertenor Maarten Engeltjes and PRJCT Amsterdam show this. The press praises PRJCT Amsterdam for 'roundness of tone and flexibility in sound' (Forum Opéra) and as a great pleasure'. 'Virtuoso', Trouw wrote about Engeltjes. And if anyone could mourn in music and offer comfort, it was Bach.

Ahmet Aslan

Turkish musician Ahmet Aslan creates a sound world of timeless beauty in which you can completely immerse yourself. He achieves this partly with his voice, which sounds robust and warm but can also reach high notes in a moving way. He also shines on his own string instrument, the Di-Tar, a cross between a classical guitar, a flamenco guitar and a bağlama (string instrument).

Fenix

The atmospheric music of Fenix takes you on a musical tow rope. This electronic-acoustic band playfully alternates catchy melodies and irresistible grooves. Together they play a colorful landscape of music that arises in the moment. No performance sounds the same because this band loves to improvise. What is predictable: their music makes you move!
