From 13 to 17 November, the Plein Theater will present a special programme around the work of dance pioneer Pauline de Groot. With various meetings, presentations and an exhibition, the work of Pauline de Groot, and her significance for (post)modern dance in the Netherlands, will be lifted from the archives.

Schönberg, Berg & Kortekaas Quatuor Diotima

Quatuor Diotima breathes contemporary music. The French quartet has a special bond with Arnold Schönberg: a few years ago, Diotima played all four string quartets by the great innovator in one weekend at the Muziekgebouw. This time, they combine Schönberg's Third String Quartet with the legendary Lyric Suite by his star pupil Alban Berg. The very first string quartet by Bram Kortekaas, one of the most interesting Dutch composers of his generation, will premiere.

Cello Biennale: Afternoon Recital of Chopin and Janáček by Laura van der Heijden and Quirine Viersen

Chopin's second love was the cello. In addition to the countless beautiful compositions for piano solo, he allowed himself one sonata for another instrument. Anner Bijlsma called the Largo from this cello sonata 'a conversation between two dear friends'. During the streamed corona edition of the Biennale in 2020, Quirine Viersen and Thomas Beijer gave a special performance without an audience in the hall.

Cello Biennale: Schelomo en Kabalevski by Gary Hoffman en Kian Soltani

The Hebrew rhapsody Schelomo for cello and orchestra is full of stylistic elements from Jewish music. The cello, played by Gary Hoffman, represents the voice of King Solomon. One of the discoveries of the 2022 Biennale was the rarely performed Second Cello Concerto by Kabalevsky. Kian Soltani gave a moving performance and takes on the challenge to match this experience.

Please note: this concert is sold out. Composer Sofia Gubaidulina attended a performance of all her works in which the cello plays a leading role during the first Cello Biennale in 2006, celebrating her 75th birthday. Cappella Amsterdam and cellist Pieter Wispelwey made a great impression with the spectacular Canticle of the Sun.

Cello Biennale: Never Give Up Maximilian Hornung, Alexander Warenberg and Phion

Turkish composer Fazıl Say called his second cello concerto Never Give Up: 'an outcry for freedom and peace'. A short and intense statement, played by Maximilian Hornung, preceded by a peaceful romance by Max Bruch.
