National Stargazing Days in the star domes of the UvA

Visit the star domes of the Anton Pannekoek Institute of the University of Amsterdam! Tours start each hour from 20:00 until midnight. If the sky is clear, we will also focus the telescopes on the most beautiful objects that can be seen at that time.

Fiery Virginalists Skip Sempé

It was a colourful and colourful world, that of the English virginalists between 1550 and 1650. From the simplest melodies to flamboyant displays, from dance music to the magic of the polyphonic Renaissance tradition. The adventurous American harpsichordist Skip Sempé plays the music of William Byrd, Orlando di Lasso, Henry Purcell and all the others as if he were made for it.

Felicity Provan Quartet

Felicity Provan plays cornet and sings in her current quartet, giving much freedom to the voices and instruments of the other members. The focus is on the interplay and alternation of voice and instrument. BvR Flamenco Bigband 10 Years

The Spanish-Dutch saxophonist Bernard van Rossum has been leading his BvR Flamenco Big Band for 10 years now: an extra-large big band around a flamenco core and therefore a unique phenomenon. In his compositions, Van Rossum sheds new light on flamenco rhythms and harmonies through colorful orchestrations and the large dynamic range of the big band. It earned him the prestigious Rogier van Otterloo Award.

Black Art Jazz Collective

The Black Art Jazz Collective was co-founded by trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, drummer Johnathan Blake and saxophonist Wayne Escoffery; American jazz musicians who currently belong to the worldwide jazz top. The band members celebrate jazz as an original American art form. In their own compositions, they honour icons from African-American culture, including WEB Dubois, Sojourner Truth and Barack Obama.

Arturo O’Farrill Quintet

Whether he plays in a small or large line-up, Arturo O'Farrill's music always sounds orchestral. It will be the influence of the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, which he took over from his father, Chico O'Farrill. Renamed the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, it developed its own genre that connects styles and traditions from all over the world. Arturo also has the same mission with his quintet, which will perform on our stage.

Public Rehearsal

With Helmut Lachenmann, Mark Simpson, Jean-Guihen Queyras + Pierre-Laurent Aimard. The music of German composer Helmut Lachenmann is central to the evening concert in the Thursday evening series on February 20. Experimental and mysterious music by a true sound magician. Get to know this special sound world during the open rehearsal. In addition to their solo pieces, clarinetist Mark Simpson, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard rehearse the central work of the evening, Allegro Sostenuto, together.
