Accessible theatre and stage in Amsterdam

Amsterdam venues are committed to inclusivity by providing facilities for visitors with different needs. Theatres such as the Amsterdamse Bostheater and DeLaMar offer wheelchair spaces, hearing loops for the hard of hearing, and assistance for the visually impaired. Additionally, there are often sensory-friendly spaces and adapted performances, such as those with audio descriptions and sign language interpreters. These initiatives ensure that everyone can enjoy art and culture in the city.

DeLaMar

DeLaMar does a lot for people with different accessibility requirements. In collaboration with Stichting Onbeperkt Genieten (Unlimited Enjoyment Foundation), they offer performances for people who quickly become overstimulated. The auditorium has a separate entrance, a low-sensory reception area, a quiet room, and special seats. Sometimes, the performances themselves are also low-sensory experiences. They also work with Stichting Komt het Zien!, which offers performances for people with a visual impairment, and with Stichting Vier het Leven, which provides performances that take extra consideration for older visitors. DeLaMar is wheelchair accessible. In all auditoriums, there are several wheelchair spaces available, with room for an attendant, which you can reserve by phone.

Meervaart

Meervaart Theatre is well equipped for wheelchair visitors. The majority of the building is on one level; there is a wheelchair ramp, and there is a lift available for the Blue Hall. Additionally, places are available for wheelchairs and companions in both the Blue and the Red Hall. Trained guide dogs are welcome, but Meervaart prefers to be informed in advance so that they can provide the best available seat. For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Meervaart has a Phonak FM ready at the reception. You can use this in combination with headphones, or via the 'induction loop' setting on your own hearing aid.

Everyone is welcome at the Royal Theatre Carré. There are wheelchair spaces available, including a spot for a companion. Reservations can be made via service@carre.nl. Unfortunately, mobility scooters are not allowed, but loan wheelchairs and walkers are available upon arrival, and a staff member will be ready to assist you. Visitors with a walking aid are advised to reserve a seat by the aisle. A staff member will place aids outside the auditorium and return them later. For individuals who are hard of hearing, Carré provides a hearing loop, available at the cloakroom with a deposit of €10. Assistance dogs are allowed, and a spot by the aisle is recommended. Carré offers assistance with moving around for people with visual impairments due to the many steps and stairs. In collaboration with the Komt het Zien Foundation, at least five performances with interpreting facilities and audio descriptions are offered each year.

The Amsterdamse Bostheater offers an accessible theatre experience in the heart of nature. Special seats are available for visitors using a wheelchair. These can be quickly reserved by sending an email to publiek@bostheater.nl. Additionally, the theatre has a wheelchair-accessible toilet. The Bostheater is also well equipped for people with hearing impairments: there are headphones available that can be reserved in advance. Visitors who are blind or partially sighted can expect support in collaboration with Stichting Komt dat Zien, which creates a live theatre experience tailored to their needs. Guide dogs are welcome, but please be aware that large performances and concerts can sometimes be overwhelming for the animals.
