Aural Spaces – Interactive Session: Bring Your Own Sounds

Sound is a crucial means of orienting ourselves in the spaces we travel and stay in every day. While music comes to us in stereo through earphones or speakers, our ears listen to an outside world that consists of 360-degree sound. We also call this spatial sound. As part of the second edition of the Aural Spaces festival in Het Concertgebouw, we invite all sound lovers to contribute to a new composition for the 4DSOUND system.

Interactive session

In this 1.5 hour interactive session you will be introduced to spatial listening, spatial composition and learn about, and most importantly, listen to artistic practices and examples of sound processed within the 4DSOUND system. In advance, you will capture sounds from your own environment using audio recordings on your smartphone (or other audio recording device), which you will share with our team before the event. We will create different listening experiences from these, combined with the sound of other participants.

Bring Your Own Sounds

Together we bring urban and natural sounds from outside Het Concertgebouw to the Kleine Zaal to experience as a crowd-sourced listening piece. In between listening moments we will discuss the experiences of spatial listening, learn from artist-composers Robin Koek and Mint Park and get acquainted with the basic principles of the 4DSOUND system. Join us for a morning of collective listening and recomposing the sounds of our city!

How does it work?

4DSOUND

4DSOUND is an Amsterdam-based studio focused on spatial sound as a creative medium. For over a decade, they have been pioneers in the design of advanced spatial audio software and omnidirectional sound systems. Through the development of custom-made technology and close collaboration with innovative artists, the studio fosters a dynamic international network of creatives, engineers, studios and institutions within the fields of music, art, education and research.

Through the lens of art, FIBER reflects on the ever-changing impact of technology on society and the planet. They explore these topics collectively through performance, lectures, installation art, club nights and by showing groundbreaking artistic processes to a broad audience.

Aural Spaces

This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. From 12 to 15 December, a new dimension will be added to the live music experience in the Small Hall of the Concertgebouw. The familiar red plush chairs will make way for a 4DSOUND installation, consisting of 13 pillars with 41 speakers. Classical acoustic methods will be combined with the modern technology of 4DSOUND, further expanding the possibilities of sound experience.

Aural Spaces explores the boundaries between sound and space, blurring and merging them. The result is a completely immersive listening experience like you'll rarely experience. Discover and experience how music moves through space!
