Bruckner's Mass No. 3 & Escaich's Organ Concerto No. 3

Although Anton Bruckner's symphonies are what we remember him for, he was world-famous during his lifetime for his genius at improvising on the organ. Today, his French counterpart Thierry Escaich, also makes a name for himself internationally as an orchestral composer. On 10 February, he'll be the soloist in his own Third Organ Concerto at the Concertgebouw.

Composer Escaich plays his own work

Surprisingly, Bruckner left no note of importance for 'his' instrument and went down in music history as the creator of symphonic masterpieces. The French organist, improviser and composer Thierry Escaich previously performed a viola and a flute concerto in the Matinee. Still he also composed three major solo concertos for his instrument. His Third Organ Concerto seems tailor-made for the Maarschalkerweer organ of the Great Hall. The title 'Quatre visages du temps' (Four faces of time) refers to four centuries of music history. The prominent role of the percussion is very intriguing – and unusual for an organ concerto.

Bruckner's Great Mass in the concert hall

In addition to his devout Mass for choir and wind instruments, the deeply religious Bruckner also wrote a powerful High Mass for soloists, choir and large orchestra. A work that was not only intended for church celebrations but has also acquired a permanent place in the concert hall.
