Ryan Wigglesworth, Sara Jakubia and Pierre Audi

The Concertgebouw Orchestra proudly presents a special triptych based on the music of Arnold Schönberg, who was born 150 years ago. Ryan Wigglesworth conducts three works by the Viennese composer from different periods; Pierre Audi provides a stunning visual setting. Soprano Sara Jakubiak shines in the ominous one-act Erwartung . It is framed by an attractive twelve-tone work and the sizzling, late-romantic orchestral work Pelleas und Melisande .

Arnold Schoenberg

The triptych sheds light on the fascinating development of Schoenberg's music. In the large orchestral work Pelleas und Melisande (1902), inspired by a tragic love story, we hear echoes of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. With the nightmarish Erwartung (1909) we penetrate in the dark recesses of the soul; it forced Schoenberg to let go of tonality. His search for a new musical language eventually led to twelve-tone music. That this influential new method could also produce compelling music is proven by Schoenberg's music for an imaginary film, Begleitungsmusik to a light show scene (1930). Noo actor Ryoko Aoki enriches Pelleas und Melisande with a dance performance based on the Japanese noo tradition.
