After the neighbourhood meal in the 24 Hours West festival heart at MidWest, 'local hero' Ties Mellema will perform with Barry Jurjus as duo PEAX. The saxophone and electronic music duo mixes minimal music with exciting dance, African rhythms, Latin sounds and drum and bass.

About the musician

Mellema's versatile style of working has earned him worldwide recognition and collaborations with, among others, Gustavo Dudamel, Concertgebouw Tracks, MTV, Tania Kross, the Vier Baritons, Hans Dulfer and Rembrandt Frerichs.

He made several albums and won several prizes, including the prestigious Dutch Music Prize. He is a professor of saxophone at the Tilburg Conservatory and, together with colleague Andreas van Zoelen, leads the largest saxophone class in the Netherlands.

Together with director Jos van Kan, composer Ian Wilson and set designer Michiel Voet, Mellema created The End of Desire: a personal and abstract musical theatre performance in which he processed his experience with an accident that almost meant the end of his career as a musician.
