Beethoven biography
In Jan Caeyers' great Beethoven biography, the chapter on the late string quartets is called 'The Discovery of Heaven'. And with good reason: just like Mulisch's novel, these quartets open up a world that surpasses all understanding. Beethoven's music captures the essence of love and pain even better than words. At the height of his creativity, he explores the boundary between thinking and feeling, between matter and spirituality.
