Loek van den Berg Quintet
Beautiful visual compositions
Saxophonist Loek van den Berg stimulates the imagination with his narrative, layered compositions. The melody is central, with his band members given the space to seek out the gritty edges through improvisation.
Seafarer, the second album of this quintet, radiates that spontaneous character. It shows how well the members are attuned to each other, after international tours to Spain, Turkey and India among others.
In September 2023, Loek van den Berg and his band won the Edison in the category Jazz Newcomer National for their debut album Wayfarer. With the title track of that album, the bandleader won the prize for best composition in the Dutch Jazz Competition in 2022.
The summer before, the band won second prize in the Getxo International Jazz Competition and in 2019 Loek won the Erasmus Jazz Prize. 'A thoughtful player with a round, melodic sound… beautiful visual compositions in which the wind floats in the sails' (NRC).
