Lutenist Mike Fentross and bass clarinetist Maarten Ornstein play Bach's Goldberg Variations
Bach's Goldberg Variations are one of the pearls of baroque music, originally written for harpsichord. Maarten and Mike have made a special arrangement of these variations for bass clarinet and theorbo. The result is a new look at Bach's variations, full of colour and dynamics. The programme is supplemented with music by Willem Breuker, Girolamo Frescobaldi and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Maarten Ornstein is a well-known Dutch musician. He plays saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet and also works as a composer and arranger. His music is astonishingly diverse. Maarten plays music from the baroque to jazz and is also inspired by classical Arabic music and funk. He seeks challenges and does not easily allow himself to be placed within boundaries. Maarten Ornstein is a member of the Amsterdam musicians' collective Splendor.
Mike Fentross is mainly active in early music, as a soloist, basso continuo player and conductor. He began his studies with lute pioneer Toyohiko Satoh at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and played chamber music in various ensembles and with colleagues such as Janine Jansen, Philippe Jaroussky and Yo-Yo Ma. As a conductor he worked with Musica Antiqua at the Bruges festival and the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt. He conducted Monteverdi's Marian Vespers with the Netherlands Chamber Choir in the Concertgebouw. Together with reed player Maarten Ornstein, Mike Fentross explores the boundaries between Western European classical music, Baltic folklore and improvisation.
