Mouzourakis and Bethel met at house parties and songwriting sessions, but it took a while before they decided to make music together. It was a cover of Boy Genius that Tessa had uploaded online, ultimately leading Wynter to suggest they form a group together. Since then, the two have found each other a source of support during times of heartbreak, passionate U-hauls, and the general difficulties that come with growing up.

With a stage name taken from a 19th-century love story, Tommy Lefroy makes songs about the malaise of modern love and the recklessness inherent in being a storyteller.
