Green Survivors
This autumn, the Hortus is going back in time, even very far back, by diving into the world of cycads. Cycads – or palm ferns, as they are also known, although they are neither palm nor fern – are among the most primitive seed plants. And they have been around for more than 270 million years! It is hard to imagine, but these primeval plants have experienced the rise and the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Ancient Green Plants
They reached the peak of their diversity during the Mesozoic (252-66 million years ago), especially in the geological periods of the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Together with ferns and ginkgos, they formed extensive ecosystems and provided food for herbivorous dinosaurs.
In this exhibition you will discover how these primeval plants have been able to exist for so long and how they have survived multiple mass extinctions. And our current modern times also offer challenges for the cycad. Today, unfortunately, only a handful of species remain, and they are also seriously threatened. The Hortus contributes to the preservation of and knowledge about this wonderful group of plants.
This exhibition also includes the primeval plant scavenger hunt – fun for children (and parents)! This scavenger hunt is free at the entrance.
