Mylo's museum
As part of the Children's Book Week, with the theme 'Lekker Eigenwijs', Mylo Freeman presents her work under the title 'Mylo's Museum - about art and color. The subject is all about strong characters and stubborn figures who show what it is like to do what you want, in your own way. On display at WG Kunst from September 7 to November 3.

Mylo Freeman
Mylo Freeman (1959) is a cartoonist, illustrator and writer of children's and picture books. She graduated from the Illustration department of the Rietveld Academy. Freeman now has approximately 60 picture books to her name. In her picture books, the main characters are mainly children of color (including in the series about Princess Arabella). About her motives; 'I heard a story about a theater teacher who was working on a play with children of about seven years old. And she wanted to give the role of princess to a dark girl. 'The girl then said: 'But I can't play a princess, because I'm brown and have frizzy hair. Princesses are blonde, have blue eyes and white skin. 'When I heard that, I thought: This is too crazy for words. Then I started with Princess Arabella'. Her latest picture book 'Rembrandt and Lucia' focuses not only on painting but also on the multicultural community around Rembrandt at that time. Freeman has been committed to more diversity in society and in the world of children's/picture books for years.
In Mylo's Museum, Freeman colorfully brings together new and existing visual work. With murals, an installation that allows children to create their own character by rolling turning blocks, a book carousel from the air and various views and perspectives, she transforms the space into a new reality. Her original drawings are included in this whole. Freeman creates a Spotify list of music that can be played in the museum.
